WHEN PSYCHIATRY AND AUTHORITY WORK TOGETHER : EXAMPLE: MAY ZIADEH

For the political establishment associated with psychiatry , the individual is a potential mentally sick being . The establishment will label the individual as such and act accordingly the minute the individual confronts the social order. When this confrontation happens, the establishment will not take the individual to the priest or to the sheikh but will take him to the doctor. There is coordination and a united purpose between the establishment and the psychiatry in this instance, and all the attributes and characteristics of the individual will be removed in favor of his sick mental condition that will occupy the whole field . When gifted Lebanese writer May Ziadeh who was the most learned lady of her time, and held the biggest literature circle in Cairo, confronted the society, all her knowledge and talents and learning- that were witnessed by all – were neglected and marginalised and she was labeled as mentally ill . Only one person of her large circle that included dozens and dozens of academicians and intellectuals and famous Arab writers stood by her and defended and protected her . The others who used to come daily to frequent her circle disappeared in no time. The story of the gifted Lebanese writer- who had the finest culture and mind- is striking of how psychiatry- together with the establishment- can turn the table over and strip an individual off everything in no time .
